Small traffic infractions can be a big deal

Even if you’re a safe, defensive driver, it doesn’t mean you’re immune to trouble. In addition to the potential for a motor vehicle accident, you also have to concern yourself with a run-in with police.

Should you find yourself pulled to the side of the road and face to face with a police officer, it’s imperative that you take the right steps. For example:

  • Stay in your vehicle and keep your hands on the wheel
  • Quickly share your license, registration and proof of insurance upon request
  • Remain friendly and respectful at all times
  • Don’t admit to anything, even if you think you violated a rule of the road

If you receive a traffic ticket, such as for speeding or rolling a stop sign, you may consider it a minor infraction. And while it may be in your eyes, don’t overlook the impact it can have on your life, both now and in the future.

While there are times when it’s in your best interest to accept a ticket, pay it and move on, this doesn’t always hold true. At the very least, you should learn more about the potential consequences and your options for fighting back in traffic court.

Here are some of the many ways a traffic infraction can affect you:

  • Points on your record: This is a big deal, as too many demerit points on your record can lead to a license suspension. Demerit points for a conviction remain on your record for two years.
  • Insurance premium increase: This goes along with the above, as your insurance company closely monitors your driving record. As your demerit points mount, so does the likelihood of an insurance premium hike. And if you continually violate the law, it could result in cancellation of your policy.
  • Large fine: Not everyone has money on hand to pay a costly traffic ticket. And even if you do, it doesn’t mean that you want to part with several hundred dollars when you have other options available to you.

Don’t fall into the trap of believing that a small traffic infraction is no big deal. It can impact you in many ways, all while causing unnecessary stress. There are defense strategies you can use in traffic court to protect your legal rights.
